My grandmother was an incredibly wise woman. She died at age 94 with her wit and spirit in full tact. She said some of the funniest things! Please excuse my frankness, but here goes:
" This too shall pass"
"Isn't that something"
"I believe in sex till your dying day"
" Always say I love you"
" I say my prayers every night and you are in them!"
" We ain't nothin' without the Lord"
.............some of those may seem contradictory, but hey- she was truly one of a kind.
Before she died, I told her I was pregnant. She said " That's what you get for messing areound!". Mind you I had been married for many years and had 3 kids and a husband.
So I was thinking of her today, how she often said "This too shall pass" and relaized that it did not just mean a hardship will pass, or a bad day. But life passes us by. Each moment is valuable.
I am so reminded of this when I am tossing out clothes that no longer fit my children. So bittersweet. This too shall pass...the opportunity to tell someone that you love them, that they are important to you, or that you miss them.
Nanny is long gone, but her spirit lives on in the legacy she left behind. What kind of legacy am I leaving? How about you? What is passing you by?
I was thinking of a difficult situation I am facing, when her words came to mind. It made me realize there was far more wisdom behind those words than I had realized.

...there's no place like your home!

BethAnn - you must be a kind soul.
You're grandmother was very lucky to have you for a grandchild.
Now go sell something!
BethAnn, Wise woman, your grandmother. And it would appear the apple does not fall far from the tree! Thank you for those timely words of wisdom. I do so appreciate them.
BethAnn, That is a wonderful post! I think of those same things. I stayed home today with my kids who are sick with colds and fever. My husband was working. I did laundry and made soup. I wasn't thrilled to be home, but thought about something my dad tells me - he's 75 - "Don't wish it away" Boy, oh boy, do I remind myself of that when I'm complaining about the day to day battles. Thanks for that great post.
Beth Ann, your post was poignant and warm. Thanks for a dose of the "warm fuzzies" as I close out my work day.
Thanks Andrew, Andrea and Linda! :)
You are welcome Vickie!
I had this discussion with our son this afternoon. He is in his senior year in high school and his team made the state playoffs. I told him to enjoy it while it lasts as it too will pass!
How lucky both of you were to have that much time together, as most don't, and many don't have any time. Thank the good Lord for the time that you did have. You both were and are blessed.
wise words from a wise old soul
Dear BethAnn,
Your grandma would be proud of you. You are as wise as she was. We all need to pause for a minute and look at life with ease. My grandma was saying: "We all be there sooner or later. No sense to worry, enjoy life". Older folks know what they are talking about...
Amen. we really need to listen when our grandparents speak...mine have been gone for a long long time...
Hi BethAnn!
Your grandmother sounds like a terrific person and fun to-boot! My grandmother lived with us for 14 years. I have so many fond memories...thanks for reminding me!
She was great! She read romance novels all day...something to attain to?
We certainly can learn a lot from those who have been on life's journey before us! Looks like you grandmother had a long and productive life full of wisdom and joy...
It sounds like your grandma was a riot. I always like old people they speak their mind.
Although we are all busy people, I too want always want to do nice things for people. Thanks for the reminder!
